Early Computing

I have been involved with computers since the early 1970's. My first computer encounter was with an Elliott 803b. When originally acquired, this computer had just paper tape input and teleprinter + paper tape output.

After some development work, I had a VDU attached to the 803 to permit real program interaction and also attached an old IBM 1620 computer so that the Elliott's block transfer commands were used to fetch paper tape images from the 1620's hard disk drive. So like magic, we could now load the Algol 60 compiler in just a couple of seconds by reading a very short 'trigger' paper tape.
